Payroll Updates
This deduction is effective for calendar years 2025 through 2028.
Employees who receive overtime pay under Section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This applies to employees who are non-exempt and entitled to 1.5 times their hourly rate for hours actually worked over 40 in a week. The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers).
No, overtime wages are still subject to withholding taxes (Social Security, Medicare, etc.). The deduction applies when an employee files their tax return. The university is still required to withhold federal income taxes based on the employee’s W-4 elections.
The only qualified earnings are those associated with overtime as defined in the FLSA. These hours are designated on payslips as “Overtime” and represent hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Hours designated as “Overtime1x” do not qualify for the deduction. Here’s why. Hours are designated on payslips as “Overtime1x” when an employee works on a holiday and does not save the holiday’s paid-time-off hours for use at a later time. In these situations, the employee is paid in lieu of taking paid time off on the holiday and for the hours actually worked on the holiday. The employee, however, has not actually worked over 40 hours in the workweek and is therefore not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA. Accordingly, “Overtime1x” does not qualify for the deduction.
No, only the “half” portion (.5) of the overtime qualifies for the deduction.
The deduction is claimed when an employee files the individual tax return. This is an “above-the-line” deduction, meaning it is available regardless of whether an individual itemizes their deductions or not.
Yes, the maximum deduction is $12,500 for single filers and $25,000 for joint filers.
No. FLSA Exempt employees do not qualify for overtime, so the deduction does not apply.
Yes, each employee with qualifying overtime will receive a notice providing the amount that qualifies for the deduction. The method of notification has not yet been determined by the IRS. Additional information will be provided once the process has been finalized, and the IRS has issued further guidance. The notification will either be through a direct notification to the employee, noted on the W-2, or both.
No, when an employee accrues and uses comp time it is considered regular earnings when paid out.
2024 W2 forms will be published electronically in Workday for current employees prior to January 31, 2025. If the current employee also elected to have a paper W2 form mailed, the paper form will be post marked by January 31, 2025. For employees who no longer work for the university but are expecting a 2024 W2 form, the paper W2 form will be mailed to the last known address and post marked by January 31, 2025.
Payroll will begin processing duplicate W2 request forms on February 17, 2025. This allows adequate time for any returned original forms to be reprocessed prior to reissuing duplicates
For current employees, if a mailing address needs to be updated, please complete the Home Contact Information update in Workday. For employees who no longer work here and cannot access Workday, please complete the address change form and email it to payroll@uark.edu.
Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson recently signed legislation that cuts the top individual income tax rates. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) has published updated 2022 withholding tax tables, effective October 1, 2022. The top individual tax rate is now at 4.9%.
In addition to the updated tax tables, an inflationary relieve income tax credit is in effect from October 1 until December 31 for Arkansans that are full-year state residents and earn less than $87,000 per year.
Most Arkansans will see a change in the amount of Arkansas tax withheld beginning in October. Employees can view state taxes withheld in the Employee Taxes section of their payslip, accessible from the Pay application in Workday. Employees can adjust their state tax withholdings, such as designating an additional amount to be withheld, in Workday by accessing the Complete State and Local Withholding Elections task.

Pay Schedule
You will be paid semimonthly. Semimonthly pay means employees will be paid twice a month, usually on the 15th and last business days of each month. Business days are defined as days other than weekends and university holidays. If the 15th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, pay day will be on Friday.
There are two pay groups paid semimonthly.
- Semimonthly arrears (hourly) pay group
- Semimonthly current (salary) pay group
Please see the Payroll Calendar to see how the pay periods are paid within each pay group and payroll deadlines.
Approximately two days before pay day, you will be able to view your payslip in your Workday portal. The payslip indicates your gross pay, deductions, and the net pay that will be deposited into your account(s). For benefits-eligible employees, information on university-paid benefits and coverage, as well as detailed information on leave usage, is included.
